The never ending search for illusory stopgap solutions would immediately end if one would but wade beyond the shallow waters of materialistic mysticism and dive deep into the blissful ocean of pure spirituality known as Pushtimarg.
An eclipse (Grahan) is a unique spectacle, a celestial marvel; something quite beyond the human capacity to duplicate artificially. We can give lectures explaining it, submit papers examining it, but we can’t create it.
But for all its astronomical, astrological and religious significance have you ever heard of anyone trying to setup automatic lifelong reminders for it?
I don’t think so. Why even bother in the first place?
But then, I have had my eureka moment having managed to stumble on to a method to do exactly that; not that it gives me any feeling of achievement, though.
I will not be dwelling into the intricacies of an eclipse, but revealing the unfortunate and rather humorous aspect of our belief system, which emerges when we overwhelm our faith with our fears and desires.
So here is how things have come to such an unintended pass.
In meeting with vaishnavs, advertently the topic veers to the ups and downs that they are presently facing in life. There is nothing wrong in discussing that with your Guru. On the contrary, he should be the authority in your life who is able to impart to you appropriate advice without a need to being ‘diplomatic or tactful’.
The problem arises when the ‘seeker’ has already decided the type of answer he would like to receive. For every problem then, the Guru is expected to come up with solutions that are instantaneous, easy and ones that don’t involve any long term commitment.
The restaurant of misguided religiosity should have on its menu varieties of yantra-mantra-tantra ready to be served. The more exotic you serve the better.
The all time favorite being something that one can just wear and start getting results; an amulet or taviz or a charm collectively called a ‘bhojpatra’ by some in Pushtimarg.
This never ending search for such illusory remedies would immediately end if one would but wade beyond the shallow waters of materialistic mysticism and dive deep into the blissful ocean of pure spirituality known as Pushtimarg.
For Mahaprabhuji Shri Vallabhacharya, the founder of Pushtimarg, seeking such a delusory solution goes against the fundamental principle of what He wishes to inculcate in vaishnavs by the means of Seva and Satsang.
He doesn’t want us to base our life on a makeshift foundation of weak assurances.
Any practice which undermines the meaningfulness of the kanthi we wear around our necks, the tilak we apply on our foreheads, the Ashtakshar Maha-mantra we chant or the seva that Shri Thakurji accepts from us, is a chink in the armor of a vaishnav which will make him forever weak and vulnerable to such never ending and misleading suggestions.
That is what is referred to as anyashraya in Pushtimarg.
The ever compassionate Acharya repeatedly advises us
अशक्ये हरि:-एव-अस्ति सर्वम-आश्रयतो भवेत् (वि.धै.आ | 9)
In hopelessness, only Shri Shrinathji is the refuge by which everything occurs. (Vivek Dhairya Ashraya | 9)
Out of our ignorance of the infinite strength and compassion of Gopijan Vallabh Shri Shrijibava arise the doubts which are the root cause of the gut wrenching anxiety that paralyzes us at will.
Shri Mahaprabhuji doesn’t want us sitting around stressed and depressed at every real & imagined difficulty that life throws at us, but instead guides us to immerse ourselves in the unlimited reservoir of strength and divine bliss that lies at the feet of Shri Govardhandharan.
Revealing these as his source of infinite strength, Ashta-Sakha Surdasji sings the glory of the refuge at the feet of Shri Mahaprabhuji in the kirtan,
Strengthen your faith in these feet…Without the glow of the moon-nails of Shri Vallabh the whole world would be steeped in darkness…In this kalyug there are no other means by which we can liberate ourselves…What more can Surdas say for he is twofold blind (physically & spiritually) and a worthless servant… Strengthen your faith in these feet (Surdasji, Ashraya pad)
But, aah, sometimes…for all the goodness that you may want to shower on a seeker, he just isn’t willing to accept it. He won’t take no for an answer and on the contrary expects you to wave your hands in the air and miraculously come up with some thingamabob that will solve all his past, present and future problems in a jiffy.
You could go on and on about the futility of misplaced belief and the permanence of faith but all that would be just some more water off a duck’s back.
Things then come to a head because all that denying has made the object of desire all the more precious. He declares that he is ready to compensate me for the ‘parishram’ that I will have to undergo in creating it!
The lure of money got him into trouble in the first place and now he thinks he can just spend some more to get himself out of it.
A person once even went to the extent of quietly slipping in an empty amulet in my side bag. The ‘kind’ soul called afterwards to say that he ‘understood’ that I couldn’t openly accept such a thing in front of other ‘un-enlightened’ beings.
So there I was, smuggling divine contraband, something that I wouldn’t want to be caught dead in. What if the gates of Gaulok opened at that very moment and I was security checked..! I would be stuck here forever.
I have since given up reacting with anger to such situations. Instead I came up with an explanation that I initially thought would be win-win. It would appeal to the misguided psyche of those who just don’t wish to see reason and at the same time free me from the annoying task of saying no all the time.
So when someone was particularly insistent, I would suddenly drop my voice to a whisper and say, “Look, such things must be prepared on request and that too should be done only during the surya grahan (Solar eclipse). Anything I give you now won’t be the ‘real’ thing.”
Now, nobody wants to be saddled with a dud that doesn’t deliver, so that would invariably settle the subject there and then. My reasoning at that time was that since solar eclipses occur so infrequently the issue would be long buried when one finally came along.
Or so I thought.
Shakespeare writes, be stirring as the time, be fire with fire…but the great man forgot to add that fighting fire with fire just adds to the blaze.
Since then, Bhagvad Leela se this year we have had two surya grahans one after the other and I am already being made to pay for my burst of ingenuity; for, as the day approaches – phone calls and messengers start descending on the haveli from those that I thought must have long forgotten. All reminding me that I had better be fulfilling my duties this time!
I stopped giving the excuse long back, but the damage has been done. All that I have managed to do is unwillingly outsource the task of reminding myself of the eclipse to a huge group of very persistent people.
So the reminders continue…
The Shrinathji Tippani on my desk tells me that the next Chandra Grahan is on the 31st of this year and the next Surya Grahan is on the 15th of next month…no, don’t even think about it.

Surdasji’s ashraya kirtan mentioned in the article should be sung after every satsang, Shri Thakurji’s shayan or at least once before going to bed – by everybody in every Pushtimargiya Vaishnav household. It has been a source of infinite strength to generations of vaishnavs. I have included an mp3 file containing the kirtan as a tutorial. (Full credits to the original singers.)

I will be in Braj – Kamvan, Jatipura, Gokul from the 23rd of this month to the 3rd of Jan 2010. Wish you all with a vinanti in the Charan-kamal of Shri Vallabh to fill the coming year with the divine light of Seva and Satsang.

Dandvat pranam jeyjey. Reading all your articles for the first time. Aapshri ni krupa che.I am so pleased to read all of them as most are written so well as to clearly get the message (rudayarud) and so ‘down to earth’ like this one on bhoj patra. this is the second time I am hearing this from vallabhkul. I totally agree and tried to explain to elder vaishnavs like my Mum, but no reply! so much sraddha in their belief as she says that it has been coming down in generations and it is the vallabhkul who initially recommended it! please shed some light.
Where abouts are you based in India?

When the time comes for acceptance by Shri Thakurji, He doesn’t do it in parts, does He? As I wrote to your father, when Kripa rains, it pours.
Glad to have you as shishyas too.

Dandvat pranam jeje,
Soordasji’s words are the final extract of pushtimarg…and with your grace only, we would walk on that…

Hu prayatna karish ke apna direction thi kam se kam Pushti margno marm samaj shaku.

Archanaji,
Shri Vallabh’s Gyan is available to all Pushti-Jeevs where ever they may be situated. If you need any specific information do let me know.
Ashirvad.
Dandwat Pranam JeJe.
Great article jeje. Aapshree has a great style of writing which I just love. One thing I have a doubt about is that when we go to NAthdwara and if we visit the Krishna bandar
we get two kanthi with a black string with it, what is the significance of this string and should we wear this or not.
Thank you Jeje.
Ashirvad Anoopji,
Bhagvad Kripa se you must be doing well. Dhanyavad for the compliments.
The black string is prasadi of Shrijibava and one can by all means wear it – only condition is that it should be worn without any laukik kaamna – just as every kriya in Pushtimarg should be done.
Dandvat pranam JJSHRI….
u r absoloutely right talking about the bhojpatra that v r asking 4…
one instance i wud like 2 share with u….
my grandmother also did the same thing..she asked 4 bhojpatra b4 2 yrs 4 mirenbhai…she made him 2 wear in order 2 control his anger…for the sake of respect towards grandmaa he wore it…bt it didnt make any difference 2 his anger untill he himself controlled his anger…
actually i had 2 read this material 2 to 3 times in order 2 understand it…when i read it 4 third time 2day then i understood it properly…thanks alot JJ for presenting such a nice material which is jst like an eye opener to us….by the way this is a nice way of solving so many querries n confusions of all vaishnavs…my trust has become more and more DRADH on SHRIJIBAVA n SHRI VALLABH by reading such a nice material…
one more querry i ve got regarding d kanthis dat we wear..JJ kanthi ma hamna kanthi na paara sathe bija moti nakhela hoy 6 evi kanthi bajaar ma male 6…many vaishnavs tell dat v should nt wear such different kanthis…i m nt wearing only the one which i got while getting BRAHMASAMBANDH frm u bt jst wanted to ask u frm many time…..
Dandvat pranam at ur lotus feet..
Dandvat je je,
Nikunjbhai i completely agree with you,
Even i had been wearing a GURU stone silver ring in index finger of my right hand, since last 2 years, since when i had started having some problems in my business, an astrologer had self adviced me without me actually me asking it for, he had made all the arrangement for it and gifted me the ring embedded with the stone, i just wore it to keep my wife’s heart happy, for few months.
But the day when Shriji and Shri Vallabh showered their grace over me and His kindness Anandbavashri holded my hand and guided me to help to surrender on the lotus feet of shriji, and gave me BRAMHASAMBANDH on 25-07-2009, saturday, shravan sud 4th, 2065 vikram samvat,
that morning i removed the ring from my finger and kept it aside, till date i havent worn it and i am very sure, ill never wear it again, i stopped wearing gold chain around my neck too.
Just nothing can suit my neck expect the two tulsi mala. Slowly but firmly i have cultivated infinite trust in shriji and my trust has comes true everytime.
How great and majestic and loyal our lord, shriji is??? who always showers his grace (pusti) standing firm with us in all ups and downs of our life.
koti koti danvat pranam jeje..
in excellent and perfect words you explained all of us how we should not fall into the trap of all this superstition.. infact very early in my life my parents make me use to wear some kind of a ‘tawiz’.. and i use to wear it as a obedient son not wanting to oppose my parents then.. but later when i understood the significance of brahmsambhand.. i completely 110% had faith in shri vallabh and shriji and removed that thing from my neck…. today two kanthis are more than enough for me to save me from all evils if any…
your analogy to the restaurant and also to the fact that the seeker wants a particular answer is really touching and mindblowing…
amazing kirtan sung by the singers.. love it and recite it every night before going to bed
keep enlightening us on our great pushtimarg..
one very kriyatmak question.. why during grahan pushtimarg havelis are open and darshan of shri is open for public while in rest other hindu mythology temples are closed??
danvat je je
Dandvat je.
Koti koti pranam and thank you for bringing up this bridge. This will help us to reach you when we face such confusions and questions. You rightly said that, today we forcefully answer our own questions and those answers are almost always wrong. Such forum and your guidance will help us in every manner.
Vijayji,
A ‘bridge’ is a good word to describe it.
Ashirvad.
Danvat Pranaam Je Je
Thankyou so much for the article, absolutely brilliant

Sitalji,
Thank you for the kind words – “absolutely brilliant”.

Dadvat JJ
It is Apshri only who is capable of presentting in such a wonder full way, (had to read it 2-3 times to understand) but it has always been your kripa giving clarity of subjects, revealing in depth truth, in innovative and entertaining ways,
and also because of asim krupa of Apshri who is always available for discussion on Pustimarg and removing our ignorance, please forgive us for the parishram given.
Do bless us with such more vachanamrats.
Moreover Haet mostly takes his food sitting in front of PC and with apshri’s krupa invariably he starts “Dradha_In_Charanan_Kero_Bharoso_Surdasji” first and then goes to other stuffs
Dandvat
Foram,
You had to read it 2-3 times to understand. That means I am not putting the thoughts in a simple language. That is something to be careful about.
No parishram at all in discussing our Marg.
Back in Bhavnagar after an alaukik Vraj Pravas. Will be posting some photos of the yatra soon.
Ashirvad.
Dandvat JJ
Egarly waiting for the photos of Vraj Yarta
Please continue the way of language, it would help
elivate my standard
and it is always amazing reading apshri’s articles
more than one time, so would always welcome a little
difficult one

Je Je,
Dandvat,
Aapshri’s writing style itself is so authenticated and has a ‘mark’ of it’s own that perhaps the need to place your signature is not even required; nevertheless I have found that your signature has added it’s own charm to the article!
Jagdishji,
Ha, Ha…the signature seems to have generated interest.
Accept my dhanyavads for the compliments. Sab Bhagvad Krip hai.
Ashirvad.
Dandvat Jeje, aapke charan kamal me pranam.
It was just great reading this wonderful article, coincidently i had been a part of discussion about the ashray pad, at the bhagvad mandal pathshala, at govardhannath haveli at parimal today morning, where i accompained with kids, though i had heard the ashray pad number of times and reciting it myslef daily, i never knew the deepest meaning of it, as i came to know today. It works wonders when we hopelessly surrender our self to His lotus feets.
Je je, i would like to admit that before reading this article, i too, like many others, had lots of doubts and very few supersitions in mind, but koti koti thanks for ur assim krupa for throwing light over it and clearing our doubts.
Waiting more such healing and eye-opening article from your side.
Dandvat, pranam.
Chetanbhai,
I appreciate the well written feedback.
I in turn will be waiting for more such comments from your side.
Ashirvad.
Dandvat Jeje,
Firstly, the article is so beautifully composed and the narration is so perfect, I instantly think of the times when Aapshree is sharing His anecdotes and the many myriad vaishnavs that Aapshree encouters.
I still very vividly remember many anecdotes that Aapshree has shared with us with much Kripa. Indeed it is pleasure to share a chuckle with Aapshree on such things.
Also, the article handles the sensitive topic with such ease and grace that can only be possible with Vallabhkul.
This website is so beautiful. It explains so many details of Pushtimarg that I would probably have never otherwise known.
Waiting eagerly for more articles from Aapshree.
Dandvat.
Jay
Jay,
Ha, Ha…especially as you mumbai-wallahs kept me awake till half past 2 in the morning once, to discuss Pushtimarg.
Ashirvad.
Dandvat Jeje
We have kept Aapshree awake till late in the night quite a few times!
It is only due to Aapshree’s infinite krupa that we are graced with so many opportunities to discuss the divinity of Pushtimarg with Aapshree….i humbly apologize for any parishram that Aapshree may have encountered by us.
Awaiting your next visit to mumbai eagerly!

Madhaviji,
Thank you for the compliment (the Secret !) Sab Bhagvad Kripa hai.
Also, I appreciate when vaishnavs point out specifically what portion of the article was especially helpful to them.
My own purpose behind the blog is not so much about the articles themselves, but more for the discussion with vaishnavs about Pushtimarg that is encouraged due to it.
Ashirvad.
J J Danvant, aapna charno ma naman,
Thank you for sharing this article, I love the
meaning of “Drada En Charnana”, I have heard this
bhajan ever since I can remembr, my grandfather used to sing this every morning.
J J mane aashish aapjo ke Shri Vallabh, Shrinathji Bava, Shri Pyariji, Shri Yamunaji mane nitya lila
nu darshan aape, maro ej manorath che
Alokbhai,
That is a gr8 manorath, Shri Vallabh will definitely fulfill it.
Why don’t you also learn the pad, sanskars are to be treasured in the family.
Ashirvad.
J J Danvant, naman
I will make it a point to learn it,
When I was in nathdwara during Annakut, I lost my was after the darshan, Darshan was from night 9pm to 2am, was a wonderful darshan of shrinathji, When I was lost I met a Vrajvasi who showed me the way to my hotel, on the way he sung Drada en Charna to me and told me we have notting to fear because we have the bharosa of gods lotus feet, felt like sharing this with you.
I am blessed to get ashirvad from vallabh kul…

Pushtimarg is above all has its own superstatus and it is great in all direction.Any one who is interested can follow without any experience and learn through Vallabhkul parivar.Very easy to follow with the great grace and by keeping faith only one can get Shree Krishna sharan. Prioririty is ‘Ruchi’ in Pushtimarg and Ruchi will be developed by Sneh and Sneh will come by Bless Krupa and that is Pushti marg.
In this concern I respect to visit Youtube website and listen bhajan Vaishnav jan ne karu vinanti.
sandip.gandhi.
Dr.Sandipbhai,
it would be:
Formulating your prescription
Pushitmarg is
Ruchi < => Sneh < => Kripa
Wonderful !

Je Je Shri
Dandvat – Jai Gokulke Chandki!
What a brilliant piece of writing! Has the signature of an Anandbava article, does not undermine the reader’s intelligence to grasp the essence, tackles a controversial subject in a graceful manner and drives the message home!
Kiranji,
‘Signature of an Anandbava article’ – didn’t know that there was some defined style there.
Thank you for the compliments. Bhagvad Kripa hai.
Ashirvad, Jai Gokulke Chandki !

“The never ending search for illusory stopgap solutions would immediately end if one would but wade beyond the shallow waters of materialistic mysticism and dive deep into the blissful ocean of pure spirituality known as Pushtimarg.”
Guruji, please tell me what is the simple gujarati meaning of the pushtimarg, as i am not much capable to understand the above meaning in English.

Dandwat JJ,
Jai Gokulke Chandki,
This was absolutely hilarious.. very articulate on all the facts, especially knowing that I still, at times sway between faith and disbelief or what we call anyashray. And there’s always that weird justification behind it.
The analogy to a restaurant, the pad, significance of our kanthi tilak, the anecdotes; it just gets better and better. We won’t be suprised if this is followed by aapshri’s hasya vachanamrut.
New year (& chandra grahan ) in vraj.. awesome !
We await some more blog action .
Dandwat JJ
Jai Gokulke chandki
Krupa
Kripa,
In a way you guessed the original purpose.
The article was written with an intent to create a new category which would contain all those anand prasangs that Vallabhkul often encounter.
But then out of sheer habit, all the siddhants got attached.
Some blog action after the yatra is a promise, but first the Lord of Braj will have to keep His.
Ashirvad,
Jai Gokulke Chandki
Dandvat Krupanath,
We have seen our beloved Shree Anandbava in Anand Anand and Anand for all times.
You are our source of “Anandi” inspirations.
We wish you to be in Anand.Anand and Anand forever.
Dandvat Pranam.
Anilbhai,
Someone quoted a popular saying some time back, ‘ Beauty lies in the eyes of the Beholder’
It is your own bhav for Shri Vallabh that gets reciprocated. That is what experiences the ‘Anand’
Thank you for the wishes.
Ashirvad,
Anandbava.
Dandvat Krupanath,
Please bless us that we understand and keep it by heart the divine bhav and meanings of downloaded “Dradha In Charanan Kero Bharoso” as per shree Surdasji.
